Description

Darco GTS Great Toe Splint – Post-Surgical & Bunion Toe Alignment Support

The Darco GTS (Great Toe Splint) is a semi-rigid, adjustable splint that holds the big toe in proper alignment after bunion surgery, or during conservative management of hallux valgus, turf toe and hallux rigidus. The lightweight neoprene and nylon construction sits low-profile inside most standard and post-operative footwear, making it practical for day-to-day wear rather than something that forces you into bulky recovery shoes.

Sold individually (left or right foot) with adjustable strapping that lets you — or your podiatrist — fine-tune the level of support and correction. Two sizes cover most adult feet.

Conditions the GTS Treats

  • Post-bunion surgery (hallux valgus correction) — maintains surgical alignment during the critical healing window, preventing the toe from drifting back toward its pre-operative position
  • Hallux valgus (bunions) – conservative management — slows progression and reduces joint irritation for patients managing bunions without surgery
  • Turf toe — limits painful extension of the first MTP joint, protecting the plantar plate while it heals
  • Hallux rigidus (stiff big toe) — supports the joint and controls range of motion to reduce pain during walking
  • Post-surgical toe realignment — used after other first ray procedures to maintain correction

Key Features

  • Semi-rigid splint — firm enough to maintain toe alignment, flexible enough for comfortable daily wear
  • Lightweight neoprene & nylon — breathable, low-bulk material that fits under socks and inside shoes
  • Low-profile design — fits inside most standard footwear and post-operative shoes without adding height
  • Adjustable strapping — customise the level of support and correction to suit your recovery stage
  • Day or night wear — can be worn during activity or overnight to maintain alignment while sleeping
  • Left and right specific — anatomically shaped for each foot

Sizing Guide

  • S/M — Women's 5–7.5 / Men's 3.5–6
  • L/XL — Women's 8–11 / Men's 6.5–9.5

If you fall between sizes, the larger size generally accommodates post-surgical swelling more comfortably.

How to Wear

Slide the splint over the forefoot so the semi-rigid section sits along the inside of the big toe joint. Secure the adjustable straps for a snug but comfortable fit — the splint should hold the toe in alignment without causing pressure points. Can be worn over a thin sock or directly against skin. Check skin regularly during the early post-operative period, especially if sensation is reduced.

GTS Great Toe Splint vs Darco Toe Alignment Splint (TAS)

Both are Darco toe alignment products, but they serve different purposes. The GTS is a focused, single-toe splint for the big toe — it's lower profile and designed for use inside shoes during daily activity. The Darco TAS Toe Alignment Splint wraps the entire forefoot and aligns multiple toes — it's bulkier and typically used post-operatively or at rest rather than inside regular footwear. Choose the GTS if your podiatrist or surgeon has recommended support specifically for the big toe joint.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I need to wear this after bunion surgery?
Your surgeon or podiatrist will advise based on your specific procedure, but most post-bunionectomy protocols recommend wearing a toe alignment splint for 6–12 weeks. The GTS is designed for extended wear during this period — both during the day inside shoes and overnight.

Can I wear this inside normal shoes?
Yes — the low-profile design fits inside most standard footwear. You may need a slightly roomier shoe in the first few weeks post-surgery when swelling is at its peak, but most people can wear the GTS in their regular shoes within a few weeks.

Do I need the left or the right?
Select the foot that has the bunion or surgical site. The splint is anatomically shaped — Left fits the left foot, Right fits the right foot. If you need both feet splinted, order one of each.

Can I wear this for bunions without having surgery?
Yes — the GTS is used both post-surgically and as a conservative management tool. For non-surgical bunions, it helps maintain alignment and can reduce irritation at the joint. It won't reverse a bunion, but it can slow progression and improve comfort. Your podiatrist can advise whether splinting is appropriate for your stage of hallux valgus.

Can I sleep in it?
Yes — the GTS is designed for both day and night wear. Many post-surgical patients wear it overnight to prevent the toe from shifting out of alignment during sleep. Adjust the straps slightly looser for overnight comfort.

What's the difference between this and a silicone bunion separator?
Silicone toe separators (like the Walker's Gel Toe Spacers) sit passively between the toes and provide cushioning. The GTS is a semi-rigid splint that actively holds the big toe in alignment with adjustable strapping — it provides significantly more correction and support than a passive separator, which is why it's the standard choice after surgery.

Is this suitable for children or adolescents?
The S/M size fits from Women's 5 / Men's 3.5, which may suit some older adolescents. For younger patients or smaller feet, check with your podiatrist for appropriate sizing and suitability.
